Spider Vein
Unsightly leg and facial spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller. They begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles. They are small blue, red or purple veins that usually appear on the surface of the femur, tibia and ankle. It is estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this general problem. People often seek treatment for leg and facial spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms such as pain, aching, heaviness, itching and night cramps.
This problem affects a wide range of ages, skin types and lifestyles. Although they may not be medical emergencies, most likely get rid of these unattractive distractions to their natural beauty.
Spider veins can be isolated or associated with «feeder» veins. They may also be associated with large underlying varicose veins.
Spider veins usually take on one of the following forms:
- They may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point.
- They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches on a tree.
- They may be in a linear pattern, which appear as thin separate lines.
Certain factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including pregnancy, hormonal factors, heredity, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged standing or sitting, and trauma.
Until recently, spider vein removal was a long and painful process that involved needles or other invasive methods. Today, with advanced techniques, leg and facial spider veins and redness of the face can be significantly reduced or even completely eliminated.
